StyleMob - "fashion because you say so", is a website for street fashion and social networking, where you can sign up, make a profile, submit photographs of yourself and your friends, and make new friends, as well as getting new ideas about style and fashion. StyleMob is the newest of it's kind, with forums and a "Style Council" feature where you can invite people to answer questions that you have about clothes, make-up, hair, and other subjects along those lines. It isn't terribly active now, because it's in beta and so you have to be invited by a current member to join, but I think it could be pretty cool after it goes public this week.
The only problem is that it isn't particularly diverse. I don't know who got invited to begin with, but clearly they were mostly into a particularly narrow range of indie style. You know the kind - little cardigans, long tops or short dresses, skinny jeans or leggings, topped off with ballet pumps or sneakers and long chains with novelty pendants. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind this style, I think it's cute, sometimes I wear that kind of thing myself, but I don't know what anyone will learn from seeing the same kind of style over and over again, except maybe where else they can buy some more pieces for their personal uniform. Someone even asked in the Advice section whether Doc Martens mary janes were ever acceptable! Whaaaat? Of course they're acceptable! You can make them cute in an indie-kinda-way, they don't have to be worn with eyeliner and lace, although there would be nothing wrong with that! Honestly!
Diversity breeds innovation, so in order for some more interesting, experimental ways of dressing to develop, I think people from other subcultures ought to get involved. In short: StyleMob needs more goths! I've already seen a couple of really cool outfits posted, and some that blend the generic indie look with some darker elements. There are a few nu-rave kids lurking within StyleMob's depths, and a couple of gothic lolita too. So what are you waiting for?
Just click to join, and once you sign up you will be listed as my friend automatically. Feel free to recruit others to this task as well, no matter how they dress :)
